Bravery is the first novel-length piece of writing I’ve ever shown to a wider audience. It was written during NaNoWriMo 2013 and has gained an overwhelming number of positive reviews in AO3 and fanfiction.net since then as part of the BBC Sherlock Fandom . The latest comment I received on it (yesterday) was: “This is just… WOW! All the kudos!”

I like to think you’re doing OK when your story leaves fangirls speechless. It’s also been hailed by members of the armed forces for realistic portrayals of both, active war zones and the struggles returning personnel face back home, and I have been asked more than once where I served despite not having any affiliation with the military myself.

I promise there is no smut in it whatsoever, and wartime experiences are only told in flashbacks to explain John Watson’s current day state of mind. The focus is on John today, how he became the man he is, and in how many ways he could give a certain consulting detective a run for his money.

Your vote can help me show this story to a whole new audience, as the winning stories can get editing help and possible publication! To reach that stage would make this writer’s dreams come true, and you can make it happen!

World Book Day: Sherlock Holmes #Shelfie

It’s World Book Day, and so I thought I’d take a shelfie of my favourite book: Sherlock Holmes.

This leather-bound edition of the Complete Sherlock Holmes stories is one of my most treasured books, and the centrepiece of my collection.

I do have other Holmes books, including The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes in English and an illustrated German version. I also have non-ACD Holmes stories, like Young Sherlock Holmes by Andrew Lane and House of Silk by Anthony Horowitz.

And in front of the Sherlock Holmes book and violin, are two small figurines of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson as they appear on the modern BBC show Sherlock, because I like Holmes & Watson in all their incarnations.  The small lads were made by Elanor Clay Works on Etsy.

Interview with me – Karl. / Solinger Tageblatt

It’s Throwback Thursday and I found an article about me (not by me for once) that was published on January 7, 2014 on youth page Karl. in local daily newspaper Solinger Tageblatt.

It’s in German, but I talk about NaNoWriMo, Sherlock Holmes & John Watson, researching the British Army and PTSD as well as writing fanfiction.

Writing Sample from The Bravery of the Soldier

This is a writing sample taken from my NaNoWriMo 2013 project The Bravery of the Soldier. It’s a scene from Chapter Two, entitled “The Mysterious Video”.

The scene deals with war-related violence and injuries.

I’d appreciate your feedback!

The story so far:

A news story broke about a cover up in Afghanistan. In 2009, a British unit was held hostage, but due to the government’s stance on negotiations with terrorists, the ransom demands were not met. Another unit, which also included a doctor, was sent in to retrieve the hostages, but they were overpowered and also taken away.

When one of the Captains was killed (for not meeting the ransom demands), the team managed to smuggle a S.O.S. note out. After this proof of life was received with vital info regarding the way they were overpowered, a tactical team is sent in. This team carries Audio/Visual equipment.

The media had got hold of a still from the AV equipment and ran the article, telling the story of a Captain who ensured that all his colleagues got out alive, but also accusing the British government of abandoning troops in need.

This scene takes place during a meeting at the Ministry of Defence, during which the Audio/Visual evidence is examined to determine the next course of action with regards to the news story.
