” ‘In our village,’ Koro  Apirana told us, ‘we have always endeavoured to live in harmony with Tangaroa’s kingdom and the guardians therein. We have made offerings to the sea god to thank him and when we need his favour, and we have called upon our guardians whenever we are in need of help. We have blessed every new net and new line to Tangaroa. We have tried not to take food with us in our boats when we fish because of the sacred nature of our task.’ ”

If We Were Having Coffee… On July 25

Hello my lovelies!

I’m glad you could make time for our Weekend Coffee Share! If we were having coffee today, you’d notice right away that we’re no longer in Germany. And we’re also not alone. If we were having coffee today, I’d invite you to join me and ma choupette, my best friend Veronique, for a coffee in the Northern Quarter of Manchester, England.

Veronique invited me to stay with her in Warrington, and I’ve been here since yesterday afternoon. It’s my first trip back to the UK since last July and I’ve missed it immensely. I’ve also missed my friend.

Today is a Girlie Day for us, with shopping (mainly for books and DVDs and music, though) and you’re welcome to join us.

If We Were Having Coffee… On July 11

Hello, my lovelies!

I’m glad you could make time today for a special Weekend Coffee Share!

If we were having coffee today, we’d be at my place. Right away, you’d notice my usual clutter is gone and there’s a somewhat festive air. It’s a beautiful day, so I’d ask you to please make your way to the patio to join the others. Can I offer you a drink? Next to my standard fare of coffee and tea, I have sparkling water, ginger ale , orange-lemongrass lemonade, Fass-Brause apple & herbs, and a whole pitcher of Pimm’s No. 1 cup, which I like to call “Pimm’s on the Lawn,” for those who don’t have to drive and would like something alcoholic.

By now you may wonder what is going on. Today is my birthday. Welcome to my British Summer Birthday Party! I’m glad you could make it, the more the merrier!

“These nicknames fascinated Julia; their inexplicable specifity was confounding. During her formative years in Milwaukee, nicknames had always been obvious and derivative: A left-handed person might be called “Lefty,” or a big-boned girl would be labeled “Moose.” Milwaukee slang was also less adhesive; if you put peroxide in your hair, you might get called “Blondie” for one summer (or maybe even for half a school year), but that kind of moniker was never permanent. This was not the case in Owl.”

“Sammy Davis, Junior, Junior converted her attention from masticating her tail to trying to lick clean the hero’s spectacles, which I will tell you were in need of cleaning. I write that she was trying because the hero was not being sociable.”

If We Were Having Coffee… On June 6

Hello, my lovelies!

It’s good to see you for our Weekend Coffee Share! How has your week been? Mine’s been chaotic yet again, but a lot of good has happened as well!

If we were having coffee today, we wouldn’t stay at mine. There’s a flea market on the upper part of my street and the Nordstadtfest (a festival for the northern part of the city) in the city centre. While it’s overcast again after we’ve had 33°C here yesterday, it’s dry out and my neighbours are selling a lot of books this year! And we’ll get a coffee and waffles to go from the neighbours – they’re busy baking away at the main intersection and you can smell the fresh waffles all down the street!
