If We Were Having Coffee… On March 28

Hello, my lovelies!

It’s great to see you again. Please come on in for our Weekend Coffee Share!

Today was my granddad’s 90th birthday party and I’ve had about 5 cups of coffee already but I’m happy to make you a cuppa. I might need one more anyway. So take a seat and kick back.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that I am worried about my grandparents. Gran was in hospital until yesterday and she’s still not doing too well but at least she’s home now. Granddad has good and bad days and both of them are refusing to accept help despite the fact that they’re 90 and 89 years old and need assistance. Today was a good day for both of them. It helped that all our relatives were there.

If we were having coffee today, I’d tell you that I finally found a family member who actually gets me! I just met my 16-year-old second cousin today and we really got along. He wants to spend some time living in the UK once he finishes school, is as obsessed with everything British as I am, he was the first to mention Doctor Who, Sherlock and Broadchurch, he loves the shows and watches them in English. I just spent a good part of my day talking to a family member about shows nobody else either gets or wants to know! But even better, he wants to work with books – as a bookseller or in publishing but definitely with books. He reads Neil Gaiman, actually knew which Doctor Who episode was written by him and when I mentioned that I’m reading the Lucifer Box trilogy by Mark Gatiss, he knew exactly who I was talking about.

SCORE! How have we not met before now??

Ok, maybe living in different parts of Germany has something to do with that, just like the fact that I’m 12 years older (gosh, that makes me feel old!). My grandma’s family is quite extensive,  but she’ll be 90 later this year and her siblings and their partners are in their 80’s and can’t travel so well anymore, so we only get together for big birthdays and anniversaries. For years, it was just the adults, though. School or something else always got in the way, plus the fact that I moved away. I know I have three second cousins (no first cousins, though) but one broke off all contact with the family about 15 years ago and the other I met for the first and last time when he was 3 and I was about 10.

Usually, when I get passionate about something, everybody rolls their eyes and tries to change the topic as quickly as they can. It’s nice to know there’s at least one other sane person in this family!

If we were having coffee today, I’d also tell you it’s been a hectic week for me and I still have loads to do. BUT I managed to work through 6 of my modules on Thursday and I completely finished three of my supplement courses, so the coming week should be not be as bad. *fingers crossed* I really need to get a move on with my university assignments, though, otherwise I’ll run out of time as the end of the course is near.

If we were having coffee today, we might talk about the possible return of X-Files. And as an X-Files fan, I don’t really like the idea. Yes, I’m interested in what they’re doing with it, but at the same time I feel that they should leave it alone.

XFiles 2015

Well, I think that’s enough coffee for me. I’ll go round to the other Weekend Coffee Sharers, though I might switch to tea. Or cocoa. Oh, and by the way: don’t forget to put your clocks forward by an hour tonight if you’re in Europe!

Thank you for having coffee with me! Same time, next week?

  1. Gosh, what a busy time! Glad you met someone who shares so many of your interests, though. I got lucky enough to have a sibling who shares many of my interests, but most of our other family members do not. lol

  2. How cool that you connected with a family member who shares the same interests! As someone who has some rather quirky/nerdy interests herself, I know that can be rare.

  3. I’m with you on the X-Files thing. I was OBSESSED up until the last season (I felt like it lost a bit of its appeal after Mulder left) and I feel like it just won’t be the same. Nothing they bring back ever is…
Sounds like you’ve found a good family function life-mate in that cousin of yours! 🙂 Always good to have those.

  4. I think having someone related to you who enjoys the same interests. What a treat! It should be fun to keep in touch with him, even if only electronically. I would consider it a treat!
